Like most NORCAL Freedivers, my usual stomping grounds are Carmel, Santa Cruz, and Monterey. In an effort to expand my dive knowledge, I set my sights further north. I woke up at 5am, made some Mudwtr, threw a couple of beers in my cooler and hit the road for a two hour drive. Once I hit the 1, I was so excited to see some kelp beds that I almost pooed my pants. FT. Ross State Park did not disappoint. Good looking kelp beds, a few seals, and three inviting coves. When I came back to freedive this spot, I was even more impressed. Good sized abalone (season has been closed for several years), very few sea urchin, and the formation of baby kelp. Pay $8 at the gate and check this place out.
